A cold front is on its way to Massachusetts — along with some snow

The National Weather Service is forecasting that the cold front will cross the region overnight Wednesday, bringing with it a period of snow or rain changing to snow Thursday morning.

The precipitation will mainly be seen south of Boston, “Hartford to Worcester to Boston line.

“Accumulations will range from an inch or two for most locations, but locally up to 3″ is possible in the hilly terrain of CT, RI and adjacent MA.”

According to the service, the snow will be followed by very cold weather Thursday night, with Southern New England expected to see sub-zero wind chills. On Friday, Cape Cod and parts of the South Shore could see some ocean effect snow showers.

Service forecasters are monitoring a potential coastal or ocean storm Saturday into Sunday and are warning that below-normal temperatures are expected to continue into the middle of next week.
