Look beyond craft beer and even natural wine, and Boston has a burgeoning sake scene. To wit: Farthest Star Sake, New England’s first sake taproom, is now open in Medfield with house brews and flights, and The Koji Club became Boston’s first sake bar in early 2022 when it debuted at the Charles River Speedway in Brighton.

Sake lovers, you can thank Marina Giordano, a certified sake educator, sommelier, and well-traveled pro. Giordano founded Sake Day East in celebration of World Sake Day, and it has grown into New England’s largest sake tasting. This year, Giordano’s Wine & Sake Experience hosts the event on Friday night, September 30.

Taking over Garage B at the Charles River Speedway, Sake Day East is a walk-around experience with the opportunity to sample various styles and grades of sake from all over Japan. New this year, the event will also offer a VIP ticket including early entry at 5 p.m., a Japanese obento appetizer, and special sips of hard-to-find sakes.

Tickets to focused tasting sessions are also available for the first time this year, for attendees looking to explore deeper knowledge of various sake types. Four, thirty-minute sessions with industry experts will center on specially selected sakes. Find more information on the focused tastings on the Eventbrite page.

Top-shelf importers and distributors will bring more than 50 beverages to Sake Day East. Firefly’s BBQ, Formaggio Kitchen, KOKO Utsuwa Japanese Pottery, and other vendors will be on-site with food and more for sale.

You’re starting to see more and more sake around Boston, and this annual event is in the know.
