Drivers die in early morning crashes in Weymouth, Dorchester

In the Dorchester crash on I-93, the driver who died was traveling the wrong way on the interstate, police said.

Two fatal car crashes occurred early Thursday morning — one in Weymouth and one in Dorchester. A driver died in each crash, and two others total were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries.

The driver of the car, Michael Spinola, 29, of Scituate, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The passenger, a 28-year-old Scituate man, had life-threatening injuries and was transported to South Shore Hospital.

The driver of a 2011 Chevy Malibu, 41-year-old Christopher Dopson, of Randolph, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that Dopson was driving the wrong direction — northbound on the southbound side of the highway — when he crashed into a 2008 Honda Pilot head on,” police said.

The driver of the Pilot, a 34-year-old Randolph man, was taken to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
