Despite plans to reopen later this month, an Italian restaurant within The Charles Hotel in Cambridge has permanently closed.

“We are writing with some unexpected news,” Benedetto co-owners Mike Pagliarini and Pam Ralston shared in an Instagram post on Tuesday afternoon. “Benedetto received word late last week from the corporate ownership group at the Charles Hotel that our lease is being terminated. Benedetto will not reopen.”

The duo went on to note that the news “came as a complete surprise.” In December, the Italian restaurant went into hibernation for the winter, with plans to reopen in late April. Pagliarini and Ralston shared that they had hired new team members, written a new menu, and booked reservations.

“We received a second round of federal funding and were in a good financial position,” the post read. “Most importantly, we were excited and eager to see all of you again! As owners, we are still processing this loss of the business that for the past five years has been a tremendous source of pride and joy.”

The Charles Hotel did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“For us, Benedetto has been a success story in every way,” the post continued. “We made delicious, inspired food. We created a community that meant so much to our guests and to our team. Despite the hardships the pandemic placed on our industry, we were financially strong. We were so inspired by the way our team came together to get us through the hardest parts of the past year, and it feels so unfair that we’ve reached this point only to be forced to close.”

Diners who purchased a gift card will be able to use it at Benedetto’s sister restaurant, Giulia. Anyone who has placed a deposit with Benedetto for a private event can contact [email protected] for a refund.

“We are forever grateful for your support of Benedetto and your trust in us as hospitality providers,” the co-owners concluded. “All we can do now is look forward, and we are excited by the opportunities the future may hold.”
